Antique Row Changes to Reflect the Times

Antique Row changes to reflect the times

Thursday, July 20, 2006
By Su-jin Yim

Stacee Wion loves antiquing. But she rarely visits Sellwood's Antique Row anymore.

Too musty, too dusty.

The 32-year-old mother of three plans to add her own business to Southeast 13th Avenue, where antique shops made their mark more than three decades ago. But her shop, SpielWerk, will sell Waldorf-style children's toys.

Hers isn't the only nonantique business moving into a district known as the place to shop for old stuff in Portland. A Vietnamese restaurant, foot spa showroom, a women's boutique and a personal-fitness business are among the latest in the mix.

The influx comes as the number and health of antique shops has dwindled so much that the Sellwood Antique Dealers Business Association is essentially on hiatus, says its de facto president Gary Nelson, who is part of the co-op at Farmhouse Antiques. A meeting to elect a new president last fall drew only two people, he says. This year, Antique Row won't have its own tourist map; instead it's part of the nearby Westmoreland neighborhood pamphlet.

Weekend’s big flea market draws ‘serious’ crowds

CHANTILLY, Va. - Maybe you are a serious antique collector. Perhaps you're simply interested in finding an inexpensive way to furnish a new home. Or maybe you're looking for a cowboy costume for your young son, who is enamored with John Wayne.

At the D.C. Big Flea Market in Chantilly, Va., nearly anyone can find something of interest.

The market, which is at the Dulles Exposition Center five times every year, will host more than 1,100 booths selling antiques and collectibles Saturday and Sunday. Two cavernous buildings will be filled wall-to-wall with vendors selling everything from antique dining room furniture to 1950s vintage glasses.

Fashioning a stylish look from salvage part of Peddler’s Home Design lifestyle

By EILS LOTOZO The Philadelphia Inquirer

PHILADELPHIA — Turning a ramshackle house into a comfortable home on a tight budget would be a tough challenge for most people.

Not for Robert Ogden, who used his junk-hunting, pack-rat proclivities and serious DIY abilities to bring some freewheeling style to a Germantown fixer-upper.

Ogden, the creative force behind the Philadelphia home-furnishings manufacturer and distributor Peddler’s Home Design, had a mission when he bought the house three years ago. Just divorced, he needed to make a new home not only for some of his kooky collections (giant lightbulbs, measuring devices and oil portraits picked up at flea markets around the world), but also for his two sons.
